Echo’s death is the fifth among the animals transferred from the closed Marineland attraction in Niagara Falls, Ontario, during a summer‑long relocation that moved 30 belugas and four dolphins to five different parks.

The move began in mid‑July and included a 19‑hour sea voyage on 26 August that carried Echo, three other dolphins and two belugas to Oceanogràfic, part of a broader effort that shipped the remaining animals to other facilities.

Oceanogràfic said it is performing necropsies on Echo and the other deceased dolphin, and is working with pathology experts at CEU Cardenal Herrera University to determine the cause of death.

Marineland closed in 2024, saying it could no longer afford to care for its whales and dolphins. To avoid euthanasia, the park arranged the transfers, which were signed off by Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson.

So far, four belugas and one dolphin have died after the relocation, while the other rescued animals remain under veterinary monitoring at their new homes.
