Why Poland’s Prime Minister Started His Vietnam Trip in Hoi An

During his visit, Prime Minister Donald Tusk laid a wreath at the monument of Polish architect Kazimierz Kwiatkowski in Hoi An. The act honored the man who saved the town’s historic core.
Kazimierz Kwiatkowski, a Polish architect born in 1944, first arrived in Hoi An in July 1982. He spent weekends surveying the town’s buildings, mapping streets and preparing detailed documentation without extra pay.
His careful records and strong advocacy helped the Vietnamese authorities compile a dossier that secured Hoi An’s designation as a national historical and cultural site in March 1985. Kwiatkowski’s work also contributed to the protection of My Son Sanctuary and the Hue Complex.
By beginning his trip in Hoi An and honoring Kwiatkowski, Tusk reminded both nations of the lasting impact of heritage preservation. The ceremony shows how a single architect’s dedication can shape diplomatic gestures decades later.
