AI Demand Powers South Korea’s Almost 94% Export Surge in October
According to government data, exports rose 93.7% year‑on‑year to $115.28 billion, the sharpest jump in more than 50 years. The trade ministry added that the increase was helped by more working days than a year earlier because of the timing of the Chuseok holidays.
The trade ministry said the surge was driven by robust global demand for AI investment, which boosted chip shipments. Overseas sales of semiconductors jumped 259.4% to $56.44 billion, reflecting strong orders from big‑tech firms.
Shipments to China rose 133.6%, to the United States 185.8%, to Europe 56.4% and to Southeast Asia 128.0%. These regional gains show how AI‑related demand spread across major markets, while computer sales spiked 496.6% on rising AI server needs.
The record export growth was mainly caused by strong global AI investment, which lifted semiconductor and computer sales, and a longer working month due to the Chuseok holiday schedule. This combination produced the most rapid export rise South Korea has seen in over five decades.
