Why the Possible Sale of Stellantis’ Brampton Plant Matters for Workers, the Union and Canada’s Manufacturing Future

Stellantis announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Roshel, a Canadian maker of armoured vehicles, to explore selling the Brampton, Ontario assembly plant that has been idle since 2023.

The plant’s shutdown in 2023 led to more than 2,000 workers being laid off, leaving the community without its main source of union‑backed, high‑skill jobs.

Unifor, the union that represents Stellantis workers across Canada, has paused its collective‑bargaining talks, saying the uncertainty over the Brampton site creates an impasse that must be resolved before any new contract can be signed.

Roshel CEO Roman Shimonov said his company will give first consideration to the laid‑off workers and aims to restore over 2,000 jobs by 2026 through defence and automotive contracts, including a planned Canadian Centre of Excellence for Defence Manufacturing.

Union leaders and Brampton officials warn that closing the plant would jeopardise wages, pensions and the regional economy, arguing that there is no economic substitute for automotive assembly and its extensive supply‑chain network in Ontario.

If the sale goes ahead, workers could lose secure, union‑protected employment, Unifor’s leverage in future negotiations would weaken, and Canada could lose a strategic manufacturing hub that was built with public support and promised to boost the national defence sector.
