What the Tupac Murder Conviction Shows About Building a Case With Little Physical Evidence

A jury found Duane "Keffe D" Davis guilty of orchestrating the 1996 killing of rap icon Tupac Shakur after three hours of deliberation in a weeks‑long trial in Las Vegas.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal told jurors that Davis bought the gun and "went hunting" for Shakur and Death Row Records co‑founder Suge Knight, even though no surveillance footage or phone records place Davis in Las Vegas that night.

Palal emphasized that Davis repeatedly placed himself inside a white Cadillac from which the shots were fired, and that this consistent detail supported the prosecution’s narrative.

Davis’s defence attorney Michael Sanft argued that the state had no physical evidence linking Davis to the scene, pointing out the absence of surveillance video, phone logs, or any proof that he was inside the Cadillac on September 7, 1996.

Under Nevada law, a person who helps another commit murder can be convicted of the crime, allowing the jury to hold Davis responsible for providing the weapon and ordering the attack.

Because of the conviction, Davis could be sentenced to life in prison.

The case illustrates how prosecutors can rely on circumstantial evidence, consistent defendant statements, and statutory definitions to secure a murder conviction when direct evidence is scarce.
