Why KATSEYE’s Sexualized Image Matters for Young Fans and the K‑Pop Industry

KATSEYE was created through HYBE and Geffen Records’ Dream Academy competition, and since its debut the group has been repeatedly criticized for sexualized performances, revealing styling, and provocative choreography.

During the “Gnarly” era, the music video showed tight outfits, twerking, and a background audio sample that a producer later confirmed came from pornography; the song was even performed at the Kids’ Choice Awards, an event aimed primarily at children.

The most recent video, “Hootie Frutti,” features overtly sexy choreography and camera work that constantly highlights the members’ bodies, often cutting away from their faces; the youngest member, Yoonchae, is 18 now but was a minor when “Gnarly” and earlier releases came out.

KATSEYE’s audience includes many children and teenagers, leading some critics to accuse HYBE of grooming by exposing a young, impressionable fanbase to adult‑oriented imagery and themes.

The controversy shows how marketing choices in K‑Pop can shape young listeners’ perceptions of sexuality and raises broader questions about the responsibility of entertainment companies to balance artistic expression with audience age.
