Ontario Transit Agency Gives Parking Ticket for Stolen Car

A parking ticket was given 5 days after Nancy Griffin's car was reported stolen.

Nancy Griffin parked her car at the Oshawa GO station on March 25. She found out her car was stolen when she got back from Toronto. This started a long and confusing problem with a parking ticket for a car she did not have.

Griffin, from Picton, Ontario, went back to the station at 11:45 a.m. and found her car was gone. She told Metrolinx and the police. She looked for her car in the parking lot but could not find it.

Griffin had to get a ride home with a friend because she was stuck in Oshawa. She then worked with her insurance company to report the car as stolen.

In late April, Griffin got a parking ticket from Metrolinx. The ticket was for March 30, five days after her car was stolen. Her insurance company was getting ready to give her money for the stolen car.

Griffin was surprised and wondered where her car was. She and her husband went to the address on the ticket and found the car where she left it. But the car was not in good condition.

There was mud on the car, and the power steering did not work. The back license plate was hanging by one side, which meant someone had been playing with it.

Metrolinx first said they would cancel the parking ticket. But when the fine was still there, Griffin had to talk to the compliance department.

Metrolinx told CBC News they could not comment because the problem was being investigated.

Metrolinx told Griffin that the ticket had become a court case. They said this happened because the car was still in her name.

Metrolinx asked Griffin for a copy of the police report so they could ask the court to remove the case. Griffin did not have the report number, so she gave them the investigator's contact information.

A couple's car was stolen with their dog inside, and they took action themselves.
