Former Tax Investigator Charged with Accessing Confidential Information

A former tax investigator in Singapore was charged with accessing taxpayer information without permission.

Mansur, 49, faces 20 charges under the Computer Misuse Act and one charge under the Official Secrets Act.

In court, Mansur said he plans to hire a lawyer but did not enter a plea.

The tax agency, IRAS, said Mansur is no longer working with them, having resigned in 2016.

Mansur allegedly used his account to access IRAS' computer systems many times between 2014 and 2016 to get tax information.

Another man, Loh, 50, was also charged in connection with the case.

Loh allegedly asked Mansur to find out if a company was being investigated by IRAS in 2014.

Mansur got the information from IRAS' systems and shared it with Loh, who was not supposed to have it.

Loh was charged with receiving protected information from Mansur.

In court, Loh did not say if he was guilty or not.

The cases against both men will be heard again on August 19.

IRAS said it takes unauthorized access to taxpayer information very seriously.

IRAS has strict controls to protect taxpayer information and will take action against staff who break the rules.

If found guilty, Mansur could be jailed for up to two years or fined up to $5,000.

Under the Official Secrets Act, he could also be jailed for up to two years and fined up to $2,000.
