Magnetic Pulses Reprogram Immune Cells and Flood Cancer Cells with Calcium to Eradicate Tumours

In a preclinical study, researchers used pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) to treat breast‑cancer tumours in mice. After four 30‑minute PEMF sessions, the tumours were completely cleared, showing that the therapy can work without chemotherapy.

The therapy targets tumour‑associated macrophages, a type of white‑blood cell that normally helps tumours grow. The magnetic pulses reprogram these cells from an anti‑inflammatory, tumour‑supporting state into a pro‑inflammatory, tumour‑killing state, according to the university’s announcement.

Associate Professor Alfredo Franco‑Obregon said that when PEMFs pass through cells, they interact with specialized microscopic gates on the cell surface called TRPC1 channels, which act as biological antennae for weak magnetic fields. Opening these gates triggers a small, controlled wave of calcium into the cell that activates the mitochondria, the cell’s energy furnace.

Breast‑cancer cells produce extra TRPC1 proteins to support rapid growth. Franco‑Obregon noted that this over‑expression makes them uniquely vulnerable to calcium overload and mitochondrial overheating, a weakness the magnetic pulses exploit.

The calcium surge stresses the energy systems of cancer cells while healthy tissue treats the jolt like mild exercise. At the same time, the reprogrammed macrophages begin to engulf and destroy the breast‑cancer cells, offering a non‑invasive way to attack tumours.

The approach has so far been demonstrated only in cell cultures and animal models, and a Phase 1b safety trial in breast‑cancer patients has been completed, paving the way for larger efficacy studies.
