Crown Drops Charge Against Ali Raza Over Pearson Airport Gold Heist

Ali Raza, a 40‑year‑old jeweler from Toronto, was arrested in April 2024. He was charged with possession of property obtained by crime because police thought he helped in the 2023 Pearson airport gold heist.

The Crown withdrew the charge on a Wednesday. Prosecutors said the case against Raza rested on circumstantial evidence, meaning they only had indirect proof, not direct proof of his involvement.

Raza said he is innocent and expressed relief after the charge was dropped.

The gold heist happened on April 17, 2023, at Toronto’s Pearson airport. A flight from Zurich arrived with 400 kilograms of gold worth more than $20 million and about $2.5 million in foreign currency. The items were reported missing the next day.

The decision shows that prosecutors will drop charges when they do not have strong, direct evidence. It reminds us that solid proof is essential for a criminal case to continue.
