Why Bear River’s Planned Glyphosate Spray Matters to Residents, First Nations and the Environment

Residents of Bear River, N.S. learned that the province approved aerial glyphosate spraying along Thomas, Guinea and Victory roads in Annapolis and Digby counties from Sept. 16 to 30. They say they received no 30‑day notice required by Nova Scotia’s Pesticide Regulations.

Glyphosate is commonly used in forestry to kill competing vegetation, but it has been linked to health risks for decades and has faced numerous lawsuits. Health Canada re‑approved the chemical in 2017, allowing sales until 2032 with stricter label rules.

The Assembly of Mi’kmaw Chiefs, and Chief Carol Potter of the Bear River First Nation, warned that the spray threatens their ability to safely harvest foods, medicines and other resources that sustain their community.

Local beekeeper Phyllis Harlow started processing honey early to keep her bees from contacting the pesticide, noting that the insects are still foraging on wildflowers and that the community cannot simply fence off affected areas.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Timothy Halman said the residents’ complaint is under investigation and advised anyone with health concerns to contact Health Canada, emphasizing that the regulatory process is being followed.
