Soccer star Lionel Messi announced his retirement from Argentina on Monday after two decades of play.

He said on Instagram that the choice hurts a lot, but he knows the time is right.

He promised he always gave his best for the shirt, not just in recent wins but also before, fighting hard to make fans proud.

Messi played in a record‑tying six World Cups, won the 2022 tournament in Qatar and reached the final this year, losing to Spain in extra time in New Jersey.

In the World Cup held by the U.S., Mexico and Canada, Messi played all eight games and scored eight goals. He was just one goal behind France’s Kylian Mbappé for top scorer. He ends his career as Argentina’s all‑time top scorer with 125 goals, 21 of them in World Cups.

He said he wrote his retirement note on July 21, two days after the final, but waited to share it because his father was ill and later passed away.

Jorge Messi died on Aug. 8 in his hometown Rosario.

Messi will keep playing for Inter Miami. Over the weekend he scored four goals in a 7‑1 win over CF Montreal.

He first played for Argentina in 2006, facing many challenges before finally winning the World Cup in 2022.

“Thank you for all the love these past 20 years,” he said. “I will miss hearing you from inside the team. Now I will support you from the outside, through good and bad times.”

The letter did not say how long he will keep playing at club level.

“I leave with peace and pride, knowing we gave you moments we once only dreamed of. Sharing this with you was amazing. I love you all,” he added.
