Why Consistent AI Policies Matter for Canadian Classrooms

Teachers and technology experts say the rapid development of artificial intelligence, combined with Ottawa’s goal to make the technology available to all Canadians, requires a consistent framework so students don’t fall behind.

Jason Schilling, president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association, described the current situation as a “Wild West” with little policy at the jurisdictional, school‑board or government level.

Provincial responses are beginning to appear: Manitoba’s education minister Tracy Schmidt said her department is developing guiding principles for AI; British Columbia’s West Vancouver School District has created its own guidelines and the province is considering an advisory committee; and Alberta announced a three‑year partnership with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute to develop a framework.

A Leger survey of 756 Canadian teachers conducted between November 2025 and January 2026 found that 49 % said their school or board provided AI training, while about 63 % reported receiving no training on how to teach students to use AI responsibly.

At the federal level, Ottawa unveiled a $2.3‑billion AI strategy and a digital‑safety bill, but a government spokesperson noted that education remains under provincial jurisdiction, leaving a gap for national coordination.

These uneven rules mean that some districts have detailed guidelines and training, while others rely on individual teachers to set their own standards. Michelle Carlos of the Pembina Trails School Division warned that this leads to “less consistency across the education system when everybody’s doing their own thing,” and many educators, including those quoted earlier, have called for national or provincial frameworks to support reliable, equitable learning.
