What Parents Need to Know About Tesla Cybercab Age Limits and Safety Features

Tesla’s Cybercab began public service in Austin on Sept. 3. In the rider guide Tesla says children under 13 cannot ride the Cybercab “at this time,” and teens aged 13‑17 may ride only if an adult sits with them for the whole trip.

The rules differ from Tesla’s Model Y robotaxi. According to Tesla, children aged 8‑17 can travel in a Model Y robotaxi with an adult, but anyone younger than 8 is not allowed.

For families that need a booster seat, Tesla confirms the Cybercab has no LATCH or ISOFIX child‑restraint system. Any booster must be fastened with the vehicle’s seat belt, just like a regular adult seat.

The Cybercab is a gold two‑seater that has no steering wheel, pedals or mirrors. Tesla explains it relies entirely on cameras and artificial‑intelligence software to drive, so passengers have no manual controls.

To help riders intervene, the cabin includes a dedicated Stop button above the dome lights, electronic door releases with a mechanical backup, and a brake‑by‑wire system that replaces traditional hydraulic brakes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an Audit Query into Tesla’s certification of the Cybercab and is reviewing about 1,000 units to confirm they meet federal safety standards.
