Why Valletta Fell from #1 to #5 in Tourist Rankings

Valletta, the capital of Malta, fell from the world’s #1 tourist city to #5 in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards. The change is important for travelers who watch travel rankings.

The city was praised for its golden architecture, warm climate and as an underrated alternative to southern Italy and the Canary Islands. It had been ranked the world’s best city for tourists before this year.

According to Times of Malta, Valletta now faces severe overcrowding. The crowding comes from record tourist arrivals, high population density and the growing commercialization of public spaces.

Bangkok moved up to the No.1 spot in the ranking this year. Paris is second, followed by Istanbul, Rome, Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney and Amsterdam in the top ten.
