The Honda NSR250R MC28 Repsol was launched in Japan in January 1996 as the final SP version of the NSR250R line. Only 1,000 units were produced, each sold for 800,000 yen before tax, making the model a coveted collector’s item.
Vuong Quoc Cong, born in 1992 and living in Bien Hoa, Dong Nai, bought one of the few surviving examples for about VND 600 million (US $22,800). He then spent more than a year restoring the bike, adding several hundred million dong more for genuine components.
Finding a legal, original‑spec bike in Vietnam was the first hurdle. The engine was still usable, but most other parts had deteriorated, so Cong knew he would have to replace many components to make the motorcycle safe and functional.
He ordered authentic parts from Japan one by one – a Dogfight exhaust, a GEARS R9‑series rear suspension, a T2Racing triple clamp, Magtek magnesium wheels painted orange, plus dozens of smaller items such as a Takegawa kick‑starter, fuel cap and brake‑fluid reservoir.
Throughout the project Cong insisted that every replacement respect the bike’s original look and spirit. The goal was not to create a museum piece but a fully road‑worthy motorcycle that still carries the classic soul of the NSR250R MC28.
His year‑long quest shows how limited‑edition motorcycles become prized cultural symbols, and how dedication, careful sourcing, and respect for original design can bring a vintage machine back to life for everyday riding.
