Spain was ranked first in the 2026 Digital Nomad Visa Index compiled by immigration consultancy Immigrant Invest. The high score makes its visa programme especially interesting for people who work online while traveling.
The visa was introduced in December 2022 and is aimed at non‑European Union citizens. It lets them live in Spain while they continue to work remotely for employers or clients outside the country.
Applicants must earn at least €2,849 (US$3,198) each month. They also need a university degree or at least three years of professional experience.
The visa is first issued for one year. After that, eligible holders can apply for a three‑year residence permit and later renew it for another two years. Family members may join, and spouses are allowed to work in Spain. Employees of foreign companies can benefit from a special tax regime that offers a flat 24% rate on qualifying Spanish earnings, but freelancers are excluded from this benefit.
Spain’s top ranking reflects its strong quality of life, favourable tax arrangements, good healthcare, reliable internet, pleasant climate and well‑established remote‑worker communities. These factors together make the Spanish digital nomad visa a leading choice for remote professionals.
