Matsushima’s ascent to the top of the world rankings is a milestone for both Japan and the sport. His achievement shows how a teenager can reshape a competition that has been ruled by a few nations for decades.
According to the ITTF rankings released in October 2026, Matsushima officially claimed the men’s singles No. 1 spot with 8,550 points. The same rankings show he earned the top place after winning the China Smash, where he defeated Lin Yun‑ju 4–3 in the final.
The article notes he is the first Japanese player to top the men’s singles rankings since Seiji Ono in July 1980, and also the first non‑Chinese player to hold the position since Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov in 2018. These facts underline how rare his breakthrough is in the history of the sport.
The report adds that, at 19, Matsushima became the youngest male singles player ever to reach world No. 1, surpassing the previous record held by Lin Shidong. His rapid rise from youth competitions to the professional stage highlights his exceptional talent.
Matsushima’s historic rise marks a clear shift in men’s table tennis, breaking decades of Chinese dominance and setting new age‑related records. His success suggests a more competitive future for the sport.
