Unpredictable weather, with chilly mornings and evenings and dry, sunny conditions at midday, can trigger asthma exacerbations, especially among people with severe asthma in Vietnam. This makes everyday weather a direct health concern for many sufferers.

Prof. Dr. Ngo Quy Chau, chairman of the Vietnam Respiratory Society, said about 3.23 percent of Vietnam’s population live with asthma, and roughly 7‑11 percent of those patients have severe asthma. These numbers show that a noticeable portion of the population faces heightened vulnerability.

He also explained that patients with severe asthma face a higher risk of recurrent exacerbations, hospitalization, declining lung function, and a significantly reduced quality of life. In addition, patients with severe asthma pay more than 70 percent of total asthma treatment costs.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Truong, deputy director of the center of allergy and clinical immunology at Bach Mai Hospital, warned that sudden exposure to cold or dry air can irritate the airways and cause bronchoconstriction in people with asthma. His clinical experience shows that even people whose asthma has previously been well controlled can experience acute attacks after exposure to cold air, rain or other irritants. These triggers become especially dangerous during seasonal transitions.

Unpredictable weather in Vietnam can trigger more asthma attacks, lead to hospital stays and raise treatment expenses for people with severe asthma. Staying on prescribed medication and avoiding sudden cold or dry air are the best ways to protect health and finances.
