During a natural‑sciences exam for integrated‑track applicants at Yonsei University, a proctor spotted a student wearing AI‑enabled smart glasses and confiscated the device immediately. The incident highlights the growing risk that such technology poses to exam integrity and to students’ futures.
Smart glasses contain a tiny camera that scans exam questions and then connects to AI services such as ChatGPT or Gemini. The AI generates step‑by‑step answers that are projected onto the lenses for the wearer.
Yonsei University classifies smart glasses as banned electronic and communication devices, even though the official guidance does not name them specifically. After the glasses were seized, the university said it is weighing follow‑up measures, including a possible criminal complaint.
At the University of Seoul, a proctor also caught a student using smart glasses during a natural‑sciences essay exam on October 3. The university removed the applicant from the exam room and barred the student from taking its exams for three years.
South Korea’s Education Ministry has issued an official notice ordering universities to tighten exam management, and the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation has listed smart glasses among items banned from this year’s CSAT. Education Minister Choi Kyo‑jin said the ministry will disqualify anyone caught with the devices at the CSAT and bar them from the following year’s exam.
These actions show that using AI smart glasses can lead to immediate confiscation, long‑term exam bans, and even criminal investigations. Students who rely on the technology risk losing their current exam results and future academic opportunities.
