Artificial intelligence is now helping people who are not specialists uncover hidden historical information. This shift matters because it could change how future researchers study the past and how related jobs are performed.
Carter Church, a 27‑year‑old AI engineer at SentinelOne, used OpenAI’s GPT‑6 Astra to decode a 19th‑century cipher dated 1809. He solved the puzzle in six hours, whereas doing it without digital tools would have taken weeks. Church said the AI’s persistence gave him an “unbelievable sense of satisfaction and excitement.”
Historians have often left many old ciphers untouched because traditional, low‑tech methods are effective but very time‑intensive. Church and others describe AI’s ability to work tirelessly as a “turning point” for the field. According to Japanese patent engineer Satoshi Tomokiyo, most ciphers on his online list have been cracked by AI since mid‑September, although some remain unsolved because there is limited data for the models to learn from.
AI is also transcribing huge archives. Daniel Stoekl Ben Ezra says AI can turn 10 million Hebrew manuscripts into text, a job no human could do. Notre Dame, Julie Claustre’s project uses AI to read 14,600 Latin pages, a task that would take decades by hand.
Experts warn that the speed of AI is shaking the satisfaction and even the jobs of traditional code‑breakers. One code‑breaker told Tomokiyo he feels useless, and researchers note that AI’s rapid progress could reshape many research roles.
