On Sunday, the opening ceremony took place at Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya, officially starting the 2026 Asian Para Games. This is the first time Japan hosts the Games, a historic moment for para‑sports in Asia.

Emperor Naruhito declared the Games open, and Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko attended the ceremony. Para alpine skier Momoka Muraoka was a final torchbearer, and wheelchair tennis player Tokito Oda led the athletes' oath.

About 3,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions will compete, and Japan will send roughly 280 athletes. Japan aims to beat its previous record of 198 medals set at the 2018 Jakarta Games.

The 2026 Asian Para Games show Japan’s strong support for para‑athletes and its ambition to achieve new success. The event marks a milestone for the region’s para‑sport history.
