The Al‑Fergani International Physics Olympiad gathered the world’s brightest young physicists in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 10 to 17 October. Vietnamese participants stood out, making the competition worth a closer look.
The event attracted 107 contestants from 15 countries and territories. Vietnam finished fourth overall, behind Russia, China and the host nation Uzbekistan.
Le Ba Tuan Viet of the High School for Gifted Students at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, won the gold medal. Truong Ba Chi Thanh (same school) and Tang Hao Nhien of Quoc Hoc Hue High School for Gifted Students earned silver medals, while Le Hong Nhan from Lam Son High School for Gifted Students in Thanh Hoa took bronze.
The Olympiad featured a theoretical section worth 60 points and an experimental section worth 40 points. Each part lasted five hours on separate days and emphasized applying physics to real‑life and modern scientific problems.
These four medals underline the strong capabilities of Vietnamese students in international scientific contests. They also recognize the hard work of the students, their teachers, and the training programmes that prepared them.
