Vietnam’s Le Van Cong won a silver medal in the men’s 49 kg powerlifting at the 2026 Asian Para Games on October 19. His success gave Vietnam its first medal of the Games, making the result very important for the country.

Cong lifted 171 kg, only five kilograms less than gold‑medalist Omar Qarada of Jordan. Qarada, the reigning Paralympic champion, lifted 176 kg to take the top spot.

Seven other athletes from Jordan, China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal and Kazakhstan also competed in the final. China’s Chen Liuxun earned the bronze medal with a lift of 161 kg. The competition was close, but Cong’s lift secured the silver.

Le Van Cong’s silver medal highlights Vietnam’s growing strength in para‑sport. It shows that a single performance can put the country on the map at a major regional event.
