Hue city will stop new burials and new tomb building in Thuan An Ward from 31 October. The change is important because it shows how the city tries to make room for houses and tourism.
Le Dinh Phong, the chairman of the Thuan An Ward People’s Committee, said the ban follows local land‑use and construction plans, the city’s urban development strategy, and the need for a more centralized burial system. The land will be used for housing, urban infrastructure and coastal tourism.
Families will be sent to other cemeteries, such as the former Phu Xuan Cemetery in Phu Ho Commune and the cemetery in former Phu Dien Commune, now part of Phu Vinh Commune. The authorities also ask people to choose cremation, which can get government financial assistance.
About 100 residents took part in public meetings. They mostly agreed with the plan to encourage cremation and stop new burials. The meetings helped the council get public support.
Thuan An is famous for big, fancy family tombs, but the tombs were built without a city plan. Removing new tombs lets the city plan better and frees land for homes, services and tourism.
