Lobster farms near Cam Ranh Bay are leaving a lot of waste on a two‑kilometre beach. The waste is hurting the sea, the sand and the people who live nearby, so it is important to understand what is happening.
Hundreds of lobster‑farming cages are brought ashore for cleaning. During cleaning, oyster shells, feed packaging, damaged nets and other plastic waste are left scattered across the beach, according to the report.
The waste builds up in big piles, gives off a strong, unpleasant smell and makes the seawater turn murky. Nguyen Van Tien said people are afraid to swim because they worry about itching, and many have gotten skin inflammation after swimming. He also said the beach, once clear and popular, is now deserted.
Truong Van Hoa said the problem has lasted about three years, matching the rapid growth of lobster farming and the lack of proper waste management. Local authorities estimate about VND15 billion (around $570,000) is needed to reorganize aquaculture zones and improve waste handling.
