Born at just 25 weeks gestation and weighing only 500 g, the baby girl faced months of intensive care but ultimately survived. Her story is worth reading because it illustrates how dedicated care can change a fragile newborn’s fate.
The mother’s pregnancy was a set of triplets created by intrauterine insemination. The two male twins died at birth, leaving the girl as the only survivor.
The father travelled twice each day from Hung Yen to Hanoi, bringing his wife’s freshly expressed breast milk to the neonatal unit. These regular deliveries ensured the infant received vital nutrition while fighting for life.
The infant suffered severe respiratory failure, a large patent ductus arteriosus, three episodes of infection, severe pneumonia, chronic lung disease and retinopathy of prematurity. After more than three months of treatment, including over two months in intensive care, doctors declared her healthy enough for discharge. She later weighed 3 kg, showing a strong recovery.
The case teaches that fresh breast milk and active parental involvement can be crucial for the survival of extremely premature infants. Supporting such babies with consistent, high‑quality nutrition can dramatically improve their chances of a healthy life.
