The State Bank of Vietnam is about to launch a major foreign‑currency swap, and the decision could affect how easily banks lend money to households and businesses. Understanding this move helps you see possible changes in loan rates and credit availability.
On November 6 the central bank will conduct a foreign‑currency swap of up to $2 billion, with a 182‑day term. This term is longer than the seven‑ to 21‑day terms used in previous swaps, according to the State Bank.
If the full $2 billion quota is used, the swap could inject about VND48.8 trillion – roughly $1.9 billion – into Vietnam’s banking system. The added foreign currency is expected to increase overall liquidity for banks.
The swap comes after VPBank, Techcombank, SHB and other lenders have each raised hundreds of millions to more than $1 billion from international markets since 2025. Those inflows show that banks are already seeking foreign funding to support their operations.
More liquidity means banks may have more capacity to grant loans, which could lower borrowing costs for consumers and help businesses expand. For everyday Vietnamese, the swap could translate into easier access to credit and potentially better personal finance options.
