Digital tools are entering even the most traditional corners of Vietnamese life. Understanding how TikTok and QR‑code systems are changing Buddhist practice helps readers see the real impact of the apps they use daily.
Venerable Thich Thanh Van, the abbot of Van Phong Pagoda in Hoanh Bo Ward, uses Facebook to post Buddhist teachings and TikTok to share videos of his sermons. By broadcasting online, the temple reaches followers who cannot attend in person, expanding the reach of Buddhist philosophy.
At Long Tien Pagoda, worshippers can scan a QR code to make a voluntary donation, eliminating the need for cash. The same codes also link to details about the temple’s history, architecture and cultural significance.
The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha was restructured into a streamlined system effective July 1, 2025, prompting temples to adopt digital tools for administration. Monks now need digital skills for new responsibilities, younger monastics are helping with adoption, and challenges such as data security and support for those unfamiliar with smartphones persist.
