How to Get Ready for a Layoff: Skills and Savings

Cách chuẩn bị cho đợt sa thải: Kỹ năng và tiết kiệm

Microsoft announced plans to eliminate around 4,800 positions, roughly 2% of its global workforce, in early July, followed by another 600 layoffs in late September. These cuts highlight the real risk of sudden job loss in the tech sector. Understanding how to protect your career and income is therefore crucial.

Vietnam's unemployment rate stayed at 2.22% for the first nine months of the year. Yet more than 373,000 people applied for unemployment benefits in the first half of the year, showing that many workers feel insecure despite the low overall rate.

Economists Steven Davis and Till von Wachter found that men who lost jobs in mass layoffs suffered cumulative earnings losses over the next 20 years equal to almost a year and a half of wages. They also noted that the loss doubled when layoffs happened in a weak labor market, emphasizing the long‑term financial damage of a layoff.

Economist Gary Becker distinguished between transferable skills that can be used across workplaces and firm‑specific skills that lose value outside the current employer. A simple test for preparedness is to explain your job as if interviewing for another company; if you can only describe internal systems, it signals a need to acquire broader, transferable skills.

To reduce the impact of a possible layoff, start by mapping your transferable skills and filling any gaps through training or projects. At the same time, build a financial safety net by saving a portion of your income, because unemployment benefits cover only 60% of the average salary for a limited time. Practising the interview‑style explanation can help you see where your skill set needs to broaden.

Preparing for layoffs is not about expecting the worst, but about keeping control over your future. By developing skills that work anywhere and keeping some savings, you can lessen the personal and financial shock if a job loss occurs.
