Chinese tourist numbers to Thailand are falling fast. The article explains why this matters for both travelers and the Thai economy.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports said Chinese arrivals fell 13.57% year‑on‑year to 308,942 in October 2026. In the same month, the Chinese embassy warned its citizens to be careful in Thailand because of fraudulent job recruitment schemes.
Thanapol Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), said the embassy advisory weakened confidence among Chinese travelers, especially those who book package tours. Travel agents now expect a 20% drop in Chinese visitors in the last two months of 2026 and warn that the Lunar New Year holiday could see a fall of more than 50% if confidence does not improve.
If Chinese travelers remain uneasy, Thailand could lose many visitors before the end of 2026. Restoring confidence will be crucial to stop the sharp decline.
