Dao Thi Thoa, born in 1977, has devoted more than 30 years to preserving the Tay ethnic tradition of Then singing. Her lifelong passion demonstrates why safeguarding folk music matters in a rapidly changing world.
Then singing is closely connected to the spiritual life, beliefs and cultural identity of the Tay people. The melodies and the sound of the Tinh lute convey the community’s worldview, emotions and hopes for peace and happiness.
Young people are moving to cities and industrial zones for work, so they have fewer chances to learn Then singing in their villages. This migration reduces the number of performers and teachers for the tradition.
Digital technology and online platforms are creating new opportunities to record, archive and share Then singing beyond villages. Recordings can now reach younger listeners far from their hometowns, helping the music survive for future generations.
Local authorities consider preserving Tay cultural traditions an important part of socioeconomic development and of enriching residents' spiritual and cultural lives. By supporting performances, education and online archives, they aim to keep the tradition a living practice rather than a distant memory.
