0:00What if the secret to living longer
0:01wasn't a supplement or a biohack or a
0:03cold plunge? What if it were a place?
0:06You've probably heard of Blue Zones.
0:08They've been featured on morning
0:09television and even had a series on
0:11Netflix. The idea is there are places on
0:13this earth where people routinely live
0:15past 100, healthier, longer, better than
0:19almost anywhere else on earth.
0:20>> The Blue Zones are these really unique
0:23geographical areas around the world
0:25where people have been shown to have
0:27exceptional longevity.
0:28>> The idea began with researchers studying
0:31longevity in Sardinia, Italy, where they
0:33found an unusually high concentration of
0:35people living past 100. In a 2004 paper,
0:38demographer Michel Poulain and his
0:40colleagues referred to the area as a
0:42Blue Zone. Dan Buettner later built on
0:44that research in an article for National
0:47Geographic, helping identify other
0:49long-lived communities around the world
0:51and bringing the concept to a global
0:52audience.
0:53>> And he observed kind of what was
0:55happening there and then he had he saw
0:57some common themes.
0:59>> Those findings were distilled into what
1:00is called Power 9.
1:02>> The nine principles of the Blue Zones
1:03are basically organized into four
1:06categories, which is activity, eating
1:09well,
1:10>> [music]
1:10>> your personal outlook, and then
1:12connection.
1:13>> Finding time to reduce stress, stopping
1:16eating when you feel 80% full, using a
1:18plant-based diet.
1:19>> But Dan Buettner asked the question if
1:21Blue Zones could be created, [music] not
1:23just discovered.
1:23>> So he brought that back and wanted to
1:26see if there was a way to
1:29engineer this in in [music] communities.
1:31>> In 2009, in partnership with the AARP
1:34and the United Health Foundation, the
1:35first Blue Zones project was launched in
1:38Albert Lea, Minnesota. Since then, more
1:40than 70 Blue Zone projects have popped
1:42up across the United States, like here
1:45in California.
