0:00At this time of year, polar bears, on
0:02average, succeed only once in [music] 20
0:06hunts.
0:12If the hunter is skinny, like this one,
0:15that may not be often enough.
0:25All she can do is keep trying.
0:35>> [music]
0:41[music]
0:47[music]
1:06>> To prevent her scent betraying her, she
1:09makes a wide sweep to get downwind of
1:12the seal.
1:25Getting close.
1:48She's now right behind the seal.
2:35>> Incredibly, she caught the seal
2:37underwater.
2:44It's only small, but even so, it's
2:47blubber alone will contain 100,000
2:50calories, enough to sustain this bear
2:52for a week.
3:05And in that time, she might even catch
3:07another.
3:17But this can't go on [music] forever.
3:20As summer continues, temperatures are
3:22rising.
3:24Each hunt requires [music] more energy,
3:27draining the bears of their reserves.
3:35To help her in her quest, she's equipped
3:38with three superpowers.
3:42First,
3:43an amazing approach [music] to getting
3:45about.
3:52Portia is a jumping spider.
3:58Able to leap up to 50 times her own body
4:01length.
4:06Nowhere seems beyond her reach.
4:12Next, her second superpower, superb
4:16eyesight.
4:19Essential
4:20if she's to distinguish her prey in all
4:22this clutter.
4:25Because her prey doesn't stray.
4:32Portia is a spider-eating [music]
4:35spider.
4:39This raises a few problems.
4:42Her lunch is three times her size.
4:47Packed with venom.
4:50And surrounded by a sticky trap.
4:56Mission impossible?
4:58Not at all. Because of her third
5:01superpower.
5:04Portia is a genius.
5:10She can map her world in three
5:12dimensions.
5:14And formulate a plan of attack.
5:20She can have an idea.
5:42The web builder is blind.
5:46It won't have a clue that she's coming.
6:12Right on target.
6:14And safely behind those fangs.
6:25But a mind as active as Porsches can
6:28always do with more brain food.
6:35Here, there's no anchor point for the
6:37abseil.
6:42But Porsha has another idea.
6:48Instead of going to the spider,
6:56she will bring the spider [music]
6:57to her.
7:03She plucks the strands to imitate
7:06struggling prey.
7:13Drawing the spider in
7:19to its death.
7:25Their cover blown,
7:28escape seems impossible.
7:39But these particular fish have a unique
7:42ability.
7:47>> [music]
7:51[music]
7:57>> They're flying fish.
8:04>> [music]
8:17[music]
8:22>> With an extra thrust from their tails,
8:24the flying fish get airborne once more.
8:28>> [music]
8:35[music]
8:35>> With a good wind, they can glide for
8:37hundreds of meters.
8:45>> [music]
8:50[music]
8:57>> But this is just what the frigate birds
8:59have been waiting for.
9:05When frigates join the hunt, the flying
9:07fish are literally caught between the
9:10devil
9:13and the deep blue sea.
9:19>> [music]
9:27[music]
9:34>> If the flying fish get too much lift,
9:37they become easy prey for the frigate.
9:42>> [music]
9:51[music]
9:54>> If they dive to evade attacks from
9:56[music] above,
10:02they could fall into the mouths of the
10:04dorado.
10:15>> [music]
10:22[music]
10:36>> The Namib desert,
10:37one of the most exposed places on Earth.
10:46As the sun climbs high, everybody takes
10:50cover from the extreme heat.
10:55Everybody except
10:58the hot rod ant.
11:05As others take refuge,
11:08their day is just beginning.
11:13Cleaning out the nest.
11:22The sand can reach a scorching 70°
11:27The ants' long legs raise their bodies
11:29above the surface where it's 10° cooler.
11:37But, if they stand [music] still, they
11:38will fry.
11:42They must keep moving or risk the same
11:45fate as their quarry, the creatures that
11:47have collapsed from heatstroke.
11:51Too deeply buried, but a good place to
11:53cool off.
11:57Foraging decisions must be fast.
12:00Too big?
12:05Perfect.
12:09Back to the nest before they also die.
12:19But, they've strayed into a minefield.
12:27Each of these strange cone-shaped pits
12:30is a death trap
12:37with a brutal predator at its center.
12:42Here lie antlion larvae, tiny ambush
12:46predators with venom-filled pincers.
13:10Some ants manage to escape,
13:13but the antlion has other tricks.
13:16Flinging sand into the air, he creates
13:18an avalanche.
13:26In this cone [music] of death, the walls
13:28are so angled that the sand slips
13:30beneath the ant's feet.
13:36As boulders rain from the sky, escape
13:39seems almost impossible.
13:55>> [music]
13:58>> Phew.
14:00Lions will normally avoid hunting in
14:03such heat.
14:07But they're also opportunists.
14:28>> [snorts]
14:31>> The lions will need to bring him down
14:32quickly before they overheat. [music]
15:09Even away from the herd, a bull is a
15:12formidable opponent.
15:15It could gore and kill a lion.
15:33>> [music]
15:51[music]
16:11>> Close to overheating, they finally
16:14succeed in bringing him to the ground.
16:30But the massive bull is not giving up.
16:45Against the odds and the full weight of
16:47the lions, he regains [music]
16:50his feet.
16:57>> [music]
16:57>> And it is now that the tables turn.
17:06The lions are exhausted.
17:09After a 20-minute struggle, only the
17:12bull has the energy to finish the fight.
17:37>> In such exposed and extreme conditions,
17:41the challenge for predators and their
17:43prey
17:44is at its most intense.
17:50Even when more sea lions arrive, they
17:53can't seem to break down the sardines'
17:55coordinated defenses.
18:15With a shoal this big, the sea lions
18:17need to isolate a smaller, more
18:19manageable group of fish.
18:27But with so few predators, the fish
18:29still have the advantage.
18:36All the sea lions can do is keep the
18:39sardines at the surface
18:41and wait for others to join them.
18:53Tuna.
18:55Their arrival changes everything.
19:10Tuna attack from below, cutting off the
19:13sardines' escape route down to deeper
19:15water.
19:25Next to [music] appear, shearwaters.
19:28Excellent flyers, but also surprisingly
19:31agile underwater.
19:36With so many predators attacking from
19:38all sides, the advantage starts to shift
19:42away from the sardines.
20:04As the fish pack ever tighter,
20:06their schooling strategy now makes it
20:08easier for the hunters.
20:35Copper sharks.
20:37They've scented blood in the water.
20:41>> [music]
20:46>> Surprisingly, perhaps, the predators
20:48never attack one another. They work
20:50together to corral the ball of fish,
20:53taking turns to grab a mouthful.
21:05Common dolphins.
21:10As the shoal gets ever smaller, each
21:12sardine scrambles desperately to hide in
21:15the middle.
21:17But now, there's no escape.
21:38A Bryde's whale
21:40finishes off the feast.
21:42Tons of sardines devoured in less than
21:46an hour.
