A report by Booking.com says that people are changing the way they travel. They no longer just want to have fun, but also want to help the local economy and protect the environment. This is a big change in how people think about travel.
About 85% of Vietnamese tourists think sustainable travel is important and want their trips to have a positive impact on the places they visit.
A survey of 32,500 people in 35 countries found that most people think tourism is good for the economy. In Vietnam, 76% of people think tourism helps the economy grow. Many people also think tourism creates jobs and provides more entertainment options.
The survey found that 60% of people think tourism helps the local economy, 55% think it creates jobs, and 50% think it provides more entertainment options.
However, some people are worried about the negative effects of tourism, such as traffic and waste. About 41% of people are concerned about these issues, and 25% are worried about overcrowding.
The report suggests that tourists should visit less popular places to reduce pressure on popular destinations. In Vietnam, places like Phu Yen and Ninh Thuan are good alternatives.
If tourists visit different places, it can help reduce pressure on infrastructure and create more economic opportunities for local communities.
The report also suggests that tourists should explore quieter areas in big cities. For example, in Bangkok, visiting the Ari neighborhood instead of the busy Thonglor district can give tourists a more authentic experience.
More and more tourists are traveling during the off-season to avoid crowds. About 35% of Vietnamese tourists do this to have a more relaxed experience. This can also help local businesses have a more steady income throughout the year.
Transportation is also an important part of sustainable tourism. Almost half of Vietnamese tourists want better public transportation to support tourism.
Walking, cycling, or taking public transportation in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City can help reduce carbon emissions and give tourists a more local experience.
How tourists spend their money is also important. Instead of eating at big chain restaurants or buying mass-produced souvenirs, tourists should support local businesses and artisans. About 38% of Vietnamese tourists plan to do this to help preserve traditional crafts and support local communities.
Taking care of the environment is also important. About 54% of Vietnamese tourists want to reduce waste during their trips.
Simple actions like carrying reusable water bottles or staying on designated trails can help protect the environment. The report also encourages tourism businesses to create experiences that focus on conservation.
According to Booking.com, sustainable tourism is not just an idea, but a reality. As tourists become more aware of their impact, travel is changing from just sightseeing to an opportunity to learn, connect, and give back to the places they visit.
