In May 2024, during the government’s Project 06 – a population verification and document‑issuance drive for vulnerable people – Thuan Loi Commune Police marked Khoi as a special case that required further investigation.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Tuyen explained that, using the few details Khoi gave, officers cross‑referenced national population databases. They discovered that the Xom Chu Hamlet he remembered now lies in Gia Thuan Commune, Dong Thap Province.
After confirming the location of Xom Chu Hamlet, Thuan Loi officers contacted their counterparts in Gia Thuan Commune, Dong Thap Province. Together they examined residence records and national population databases, eventually locating a family that matched Khoi’s details, although the family had moved elsewhere.
Lieutenant Colonel Le Thanh Nam, Deputy Chief of Thuan Loi Commune Police, said that on August 3 the team reached Khoi’s relatives in Can Gio, Ho Chi Minh City. The family verified his identity and travelled to Dong Nai, where the reunion took place on August 5.
When Khoi saw his siblings and extended family, the meeting turned into an emotional celebration, with tears, embraces and gratitude directed at the police officers who never gave up the search.
