The construction will be overseen by the Victorian government together with community‑housing providers and First Nations organisations, and the new dwellings will be spread across Melbourne, Greater Geelong, Mildura, Swan Hill and other regional areas.

Youth homelessness remains a pressing issue: about 7,600 young people in Victoria spend each night without a safe place to sleep, yet only 3 % of the available homelessness beds are allocated to them. Melbourne City Mission estimates that at least 5,000 dedicated youth tenancies are needed to close the gap.

People with lived experience have welcomed the funding. Gia, who escaped an abusive marriage, said stable housing was essential for her safety and to rebuild her future. Paul Wappett, chief executive of Melbourne City Mission, stressed that without more beds young people are “trapped in this homelessness cycle.”

While the new homes do not guarantee an end to the shortage, they increase the capacity of crisis accommodation and create more options for women and youth who need immediate safety and a stepping‑stone toward longer‑term independence.
