Alberta sheriff not criminally charged for AI‑made sexual images of co‑workers
The officer said he started with ordinary photos that were posted on social media and let the AI change them into intimate images. The investigation found no proof that he tried to share the altered pictures.
The investigation began after a family member discovered the AI‑generated photos on the officer’s phone and reported them to the employer. Alberta’s police watchdog, ASIRT, called the conduct serious and said it could affect the safety feelings of the women involved.
When the investigation started, the existing laws did not define creating AI‑generated sexual images as a criminal offence. New legislation covering intimate AI‑generated images only came into force after the case was already under review.
Because ASIRT’s mandate is limited to criminal matters, the agency said the officer’s behaviour would be handled through the Alberta Sheriffs’ code of conduct rather than through criminal courts.
The officer has been taken off active duty while the sheriffs conduct an internal investigation.
