One Juror’s Refusal to Accept Insanity Defense Causes Lindsay Clancy Mistrial

The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. Eleven jurors voted to find Lindsay Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity, while juror Michael P. Desronvil was the only one who voted for conviction, creating an 11‑1 deadlock.

Desronvil later told NewsNation that he never doubted the prosecution’s claim that Clancy knew what she was doing when she strangled her three children in January 2023. He said the evidence showed she planned the killings.

Because Massachusetts law requires a unanimous decision, Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial after the 11‑1 split. He also ordered the jurors’ identities and questionnaires to remain sealed for safety reasons.

Clancy, a former labor‑and‑delivery nurse, admitted killing her children but argued she suffered from severe mental illness at the time, which should excuse her criminal responsibility. Prosecutors maintain she understood her actions were wrong.

The mistrial means prosecutors must now choose whether to bring the case before a new jury. A next court date is set for September 29, giving them time to decide if a retrial is feasible under the same unanimity requirement.
