Early Olympic quota spot reshapes Clancy‑Fejes partnership planning

At the Asian Championships in Shangluo, China, Taliqua Clancy and 21‑year‑old Stefie Fejes won the gold medal. It was only their sixth tournament together, but the victory earned Australia a quota place for the LA28 Olympic Games.

A recent change to the Olympic beach‑volleyball qualification system means that winning a continental championship now secures a spot for the Games. Because of this rule, Australia qualified a quota just under two years before the 2028 Olympics – the earliest qualification in Clancy’s almost twenty‑year elite career.

The quota guarantees that an Australian team can compete in Los Angeles, but it does not automatically lock in the Clancy‑Fejes pairing. The Australian federation will still decide which duo fills the spot.

Clancy said the new rule forced them to create a short‑term plan inside their long‑term Olympic strategy. “We have to make a short plan within the really big, long‑term plan of getting to the Games,” she explained.

Having the ticket so early lets the pair shape their training cycles, choose which international events to enter, and focus on building chemistry. It also gives them time to improve their world ranking and secure a better seeding for the Olympics.
