White House Retro Arcade Games Trigger Copyright and Policy Backlash

The White House announced on its official X account that a new site, Arcade.gov, now offers five retro‑style video games designed in an 8‑bit aesthetic.

The games are: Flappy Bill, a clone of Flappy Bird where an eagle flies over the National Mall; Supply Line, a spoof of the arcade game Tapper that encourages users to sort cafeteria food as part of the "Make America Healthy Again" campaign; Trump Savings Tycoon, in which players collect money for "Trump Accounts" for children born during the president’s term; Rio Run, a Snake‑style game that has players patrol the Rio Grande and "catch" immigrants who appear in orange jumpsuits; and Build the Wall, a Tetris‑like zombie game that asks players to stack blocks to protect the border.

The launch videos on X mimicked the opening screens of Sega, Nintendo and Xbox consoles, turning their logos into satirical MAGA‑themed graphics.

The Tetris Company responded publicly, issuing a statement about the Build the Wall game’s use of its trademarked mechanics and design.

Many social‑media users reacted negatively, urging Nintendo, Xbox or other rights holders to sue for copyright infringement and noting that the games focus only on the administration’s preferred topics while ignoring other pressing issues.

The controversy shows how a government can use nostalgic video games to spread policy messages, but also raises legal questions about intellectual‑property rights and the appropriateness of using entertainment for political propaganda.
