Singer and Media Executive Charged with Copyright Infringement on YouTube
The police agency said on August 5 that they had arrested Nguyen Thi Hien, who owns a YouTube channel, and Nguyen Thanh Hiep, the director of a media company, for breaking copyright laws. They are being held for investigation. The police are looking into their actions.
Hien worked with a media company to manage her YouTube channel, which has many subscribers and music videos.
The investigation found that Hien uploaded many copyrighted songs without permission. Some of her videos were watched millions of times. She did not pay the owners of the songs as required by law.
The investigation agency said that Hien's actions caused the owners of the songs to lose a lot of money, while she made a profit from YouTube.
In another case, the police agency also arrested Hiep, whose company runs a YouTube channel with many videos and views. The channel is run with a media company.
The investigation found that between 2021 and 2026, Hiep uploaded many copyrighted songs without permission. More than 200 videos broke copyright rules.
The investigation agency said that Hiep's actions caused the owners of the songs to lose money, while he made a profit from YouTube.
The agency said that having a license to perform a song does not mean you can record or upload it to the internet.
Under Vietnamese law, different rights like performance and reproduction need to be authorized by the copyright owner. This must be done unless the law says otherwise.
The authorities reminded media companies and event organizers to check the copyright of works, sign agreements, and pay royalties before publishing online.
The police in Ho Chi Minh City are still investigating the cases. They are following the law.
