Why Myna Birds Have Turned Sydney Trains Into Their Daily Commute
Journalist Jackie Dent filmed the birds on a Sunday morning at Roseville Station and uploaded the video, which has now been viewed more than 4.6 million times.
A train guard told Dent that the birds travel each day between Lindfield and Artarmon, a journey that takes about seven to ten minutes, and that they may know when to get off because of the station announcements, or perhaps something about the interior lights.
Sean Dooley of BirdLife Australia said the mynas are intelligent birds that have learned to live alongside humans, and that they are able to outcompete native species such as parrots.
Their daily commutes show how adaptable wildlife can become in a modern city, using human cues to navigate public transport.
