Why Cassie's Future Depends on Growing Up With Other Chimps, Not Humans

In June, 19‑year‑old alpha female Sile gave birth to a baby chimp named Cassie at Rockhampton Zoo, but she accidentally dropped the infant only hours after delivery, resulting in a broken leg.

Because the injury required constant attention, keepers hand‑reared Cassie around the clock, striving to replicate normal chimpanzee social behaviours as closely as possible.

Once Cassie's leg had healed, staff tried to re‑introduce her to her mother Sile and to the adult female Mary, but both females displayed aggression, leaving Cassie with bruises and bite marks.

Jo Thrower, the zoo’s primate team leader, explained that “staying in human care she’s going to grow up believing she’s a human,” and that the young chimp would face serious behavioural problems if she remained isolated from other chimps.

Consequently, the zoo intends to relocate Cassie to another facility where she can join a new chimp troop and develop alongside members of her own species.

Cassie is the offspring of alpha female Sile and the troop’s alpha male Alon; the current group comprises seven chimps – four males aged six to thirty and three females aged eight to twenty‑three – highlighting how a stable, species‑specific social environment is essential for a chimp’s health, learning and successful integration.
