What the Watarrka Waterhole Live Stream Reveals About Wildlife and Climate Change

The continuous live stream is broadcasting from a waterhole in Watarrka National Park, near Kings Canyon, about 350 km south‑west of Alice Springs.

The stream is a joint effort of Charles Darwin University’s Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods and NT Parks and Wildlife. Powered by solar panels, a Starlink Mini satellite link and an onsite computer, it works without any mains electricity.

Freshwater ecology professor Jenny Davis, who has studied Central Australian waterholes since 1986, led the installation. She and a four‑person team spent about a week setting up the equipment, hiking 2 km each day from the Kings Canyon car park to the site.

The camera captures dingoes, euros (hill wallabies), a variety of birds, insects and, after rain, frogs that flash their eyes in the dark. Viewers can even hear rain, frog calls and bird songs.

For researchers the footage is more than a wildlife show. The waterhole sits on a temporary stream that can shrink or disappear, so the live images let scientists track water availability and see how animal behaviour changes as rainfall patterns shift.

Dr Davis said, “We’re looking for what’s happening with global warming because, at this site, the only real impact on the amount of water present is going to be climate change.” She added that the stream shows which species drink, when they arrive and how their habits may evolve as the planet warms.

NT Parks and Wildlife senior district ranger Di Bowman noted that the live stream lets people experience outback wildlife from home, raising awareness of the fragile desert ecosystem.
