Why the 2026 Emmys Shut Out Actors of Colour Despite Diversity Pledges

The ceremony’s broadcast showed a complete shutout for actors of colour: all ten acting categories were won by white performers. Only 17 performers of colour were nominated for acting, a drop from 28 the year before.

Activist and writer April Reign, who launched the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag in 2015, said the pattern of white‑only winners is a design feature of how the institution votes. She told CBC News, “A single snub is an accident. A pattern this consistent is a design feature of how the institution votes.”

By Tuesday morning, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite was trending as viewers criticised the Television Academy. The Academy’s February 2026 transparency report revealed that 67 % of its voting members were white, even as it highlighted growth among biracial, multiracial, East Asian, Southeast Asian, women, non‑binary, transgender and intersex voters.

Looking back, the Emmys have shown fluctuating diversity. In 2025 only one person of colour won an acting award – Tramell Tillman for supporting actor in a drama series. In 2024 four acting trophies went to diverse winners, and 2021 was the last year when all acting winners were white.

Reign argues that the conversation about representation must start long before awards season, pointing to writers, casting directors and show‑runners who decide which stories reach the screen. Without early changes, the voting pool remains dominated by a largely white membership, perpetuating the same outcomes each year.
