Asia‑Pacific travelers slow down, seek local experiences and rely on digital tools

A recent study shows that many Asia‑Pacific holidaymakers feel burnt out, but they are changing the way they travel.

The Booking.com Travel Happiness Index, released after an independent online survey of 10,136 travelers aged 21 and older in May 2026 across ten markets, found that 79 % of South Korean, 71 % of Indian and 64 % of Japanese respondents said they experienced negative emotions such as anxiety or stress while traveling. In contrast, more than half of Chinese travelers reported no negative feelings, and 86 % said that simply having an upcoming trip lifted their mood.

To combat this burnout, 73 % of those surveyed now prefer to stay in one place and soak up local sights, food and culture instead of rushing between many destinations. The same trend shows a growing interest in vacation homes and unique local stays, which many see as offering better value than traditional hotels.

Technology is helping the shift. Eighty‑four percent of participants said digital tools make planning and booking easier, while 88 % felt more confident using trusted booking platforms. Laura Houldsworth, managing director for Asia Pacific at Booking.com, explained that reliable digital platforms remove unnecessary hassles, letting travelers focus on the moments that truly matter.

These findings suggest that post‑pandemic holidaymakers in the region are prioritising mental well‑being, authentic experiences and tech‑enabled simplicity over packed itineraries.
