Graffiti Arrests Highlight Hong Kong’s Fight to Keep Its Tourist Image

The police caught two men, aged 30 and 40, in the restricted area of Hong Kong International Airport on Wednesday evening. They were about to board separate flights – one to the United States and one to Australia.

Earlier that day, staff at the Chai Wan MTR depot found two graffiti pieces, each about 1 by 5 metres, sprayed on the side of a train carriage that was not in service.

The same staff saw two men wearing high‑visibility reflective vests near the train. When they noticed the workers, the men cut anti‑intrusion wiring, ran toward Heng Fa Chuen and climbed a three‑metre‑high wall.

Police later seized nine cans of spray paint, a wooden ladder and the two high‑visibility vests. They also took clothing from the men’s checked luggage and detained the duo before their flights left.

The two suspects are being held on suspicion of criminal damage, an offence that can carry up to ten years in prison.

Hong Kong is the world’s second‑most‑visited city after Bangkok, with 31.22 million visitors in the first seven months of the year – a 12 % rise from the same period last year.

By acting quickly against graffiti, Hong Kong shows it will protect public spaces and keep a safe, clean image for the many tourists who come to the city.
