Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, announced his retirement from Portugal and said he will not have a farewell match. The news is important because it ends the career of a world‑famous player without a final game.
Ronaldo told Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca about his retirement just hours before he posted a farewell video online. He also refused a phone call with coach Jorge Jesus, showing his wish not to work with the current staff.
The conflict with Jesus started in September when Ronaldo was left on the bench during a match in Oslo. He left the training camp without permission, and the federation gave him a one‑month suspension that ended on Oct. 30.
In early October Ronaldo wrote an open letter saying Jesus broke promises about handling their dispute. Since a meeting on Sept. 30, Ronaldo and Jesus have not spoken directly.
Even though his suspension ended early, Ronaldo chose to retire before the squad list was announced, so he would not be forced to play. He left the national team with 234 caps and 146 goals, but without a farewell match.
