0:00I guess my question then is like, I'm
0:02I'm looking at you with my eyes, right?
0:03I'm I'm listening to you with my ears.
0:07Yeah. What are birds sensing magnetism
0:10[music] with?
0:11>> Great. Also, I love the way that you're
0:13asking these questions with a slightly
0:14confused tone. That is the right That is
0:16the right tone. Just to just to be
0:18clear.
0:19>> I have no idea how to even like wrap my
0:21I'm I'm going to let you have the
0:22magnetic field thing without asking like
0:2415 more questions on it. Yes. But yeah,
0:27I I
0:28What is in the bird that is getting them
0:31this information?
0:33>> The short answer is we don't know.
0:36>> Perfect.
0:37>> And [laughter]
0:37that's kind of astonishing. Just take
0:40vision. My eyes see. I can tell you
0:43exactly which molecules inside my eye
0:45are responsible for reacting to light
0:48and transforming that into an electrical
0:51signal that goes to my brain. That's all
0:53really worked out.
0:55>> Right.
0:55>> We don't have that for magnetoreception.
0:58And there are many reasons for that. One
1:00of the reasons is that with light,
1:04the stuff that we see, we know that
1:06light is [music] blocked by living
1:08matter. So any organ that detects light
1:10should be on the surface of the body or,
1:14you know, connected exposed to it by
1:16some kind of hole. The problem is that
1:18magnetic field permeates living matter.
1:22>> Right.
1:22>> So they just go through my body and
1:24they're not impeded by skin or bone or
1:27anything like that. And so a sensor that
1:30detects a magnetic field could be
1:32absolutely anywhere.
1:34>> [music]
